The Rio Grande River begins at the base of the Canby Mountain in the Rio Grande National Forest and stretches 1,865 miles into the Gulf of Mexico. The river flows south from southern Colorado into Albuquerque, New Mexico. From there it flows through Las Cruces to El Paso, Texas where it becomes the national border between Texas and Mexico. Since 1848 the Rio Grande (or Rio Bravo, or Rio Bravo del Norte) has served as a 1,250 mile natural boundary between the United States and Mexico.
The newest temporary exhibit at The Petroleum Museum features Rio Grande ¡Bravo! This exhibit will highlight the Rio Grande River as it travels through canyons, irrigation systems, gorges, urban communities, and much more. Jon Smith’s beautiful panoramic photography illustrates how the river matures from a pristine stream into a powerful river, showing the impact the Rio Grande had on civilization and how civilization has impacted the river.
